Bike Taupō started creating the 71 km Great Lake Trail in 2007. John Key opened the last stage of the current trail in April 2014. This was achieved using planning, perseverance and persistence, some blood, plenty of sweat and a few tears. Further construction is planned.
The trail is a grade three mountain bike trail (as opposed to single track, the Great Lake Trail is two way) built by mountain bike riders. Construction techniques and a pumice base means there is very little mud, so you can ride the trail in all weathers.
