Craters Mountain Bike Park is CLOSED
Craters MTB Park is NOW CLOSED for at least six months due to the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle
The park owners (LINZ) and forest managers have closed the park to the public until remedial works (including harvesting and land clearance) is completed.
The damage caused by the cyclone means that the park is a multiple hazard site with a risk of severe and fatal injuries to people accessing the park. The work to remediate the park by the forest managers carries a similar risk.
Any unauthorised people accessing the park will be trespassed for two years and fined. This is necessary as individuals have continued to access the park since the cyclone.
If unauthorised access continues Bike Taupo’s license to operate the trails in the park may be revoked PERMANENTLY meaning that there will be no public access to the Park at all.
We cannot stress enough how important it is that everyone stays out of the park until ALL logging operations are completed in the forest, people accessing the forest when it’s closed are seriously putting our long-term Bike Taupo concession at risk! If you abuse it, we will lose it!
Bike Taupo will continue to work alongside LINZ, adhere to all Health and Safety regulations, to ensure that we will be able to rebuild Craters back to its former glory! We know it will feel like a long 6 months, but we will get there.
As soon as it’s possible, Bike Taupo’s contractors will be working to restore and rebuild the trail. We anticipate that a large amount of the park’s trails will be open and ridable once the park is able to open.
Until then, we have over 100km of trails that can be ridden throughout the District including the Huka Trails, Great Lake Trails and the Tongariro River Trails.
Operators are still working and providing bike hire, guiding and transportation services to those open trails, so get behind these great people.
Bike Taupo will continue providing information on the status of all our trails via our website and Facebook, Instagram and our Newsletters.
