August 2024 - Craters MTB Park Update
It’s hard to believe it’s been 6 months since the closure of Craters Mountain Bike Park but during that time, there’s been a whole lot achieved.
The forestry crews have been able to continue their work and thanks to (mostly) everyone staying out of the Park and people following the rules, the Bike Taupō track crew have been able to continue their work clearing and rebuilding the tracks.
Check out the photos, the crew have made good progress on the rebuild of Tourist Trap with maybe 50% of new track built!. We have also built part of Zip with around 25% of it completed.
SH Fun doesn’t look like a whole lot of fun right now but soon we can ‘crack’ into it!. We have assessed between 300 – 400 trees need to be cleared off the track but that’s not too many based on the 2700 (give or take a few) that have already been cleared elsewhere.
The priority is to complete Tourist Trap and then get BBC and Zip built to a complete the outside loop with access to the tracks in the middle of the Park.
We are now waiting on the logging crew for the 60 km hill area but once they finish, we are all back in business!
Maintenance of the Park is still to the forefront with spraying of existing tracks required to begin in September as well as some physical vegetation control which will be required. Unfortunately, there’s nothing worse than an unridden track to create a greater maintenance requirement than normal.
We are working as fast we can to have the park ready to open and for the Cycle Challenge events being held in November. At this stage we still can’t allow our members to volunteer to assist the crew due to the safety risks with the logging being undertaken but once that time comes, we will let everyone know. We can’t emphasise enough our appreciation for the offers of support we are receiving and so keep them coming.
