Huka Trapping Update - December 2022
Huka Trapping started predator control on the Huka Trails along the river (Spa Park to Aratiatia) in June 2018. Later at the end of 2020, Bike Taupo modified the concession with LINZ to allow pest control in Craters Mountain Bike Park.
We now have about 50 volunteers managing 450 traps and the total tally of pests killed has just passed 7,000. In the last 12 months this includes 1650 rats, 670 possums and 44 stoats and weasels.
An innovation for us is the use of trail cameras and tracking tunnels to get a better idea of the problems to be solved. Feral cats are identified as an ongoing difficult problem.
You will probably see our volunteers out checking traps in their yellow vests with “Predator Control” on the back. Please do not handle the traps.

We believe we are making a difference. Keep an eye out for the special, less common, birds on the tracks.
